Medical Student Oath
Committing ourselves to making a difference in our world.
ALLIED HEALTHCARE STUDENT OATH.
Officer/Attending: Please raise your right hand and repeat after me:
Professional status as a medical student is maintained and enriched by the willingness of the individual practitioner to accept and fulfill obligations to society, other medical professionals, and the medical profession. As a student medical provider, I solemnly (pledge, swear, or affirm) myself to the following code of professional ethics:
· To first do no harm, conserve life, alleviate suffering, promote health, improve the wellness of my community, and encourage the highest quality and equal availability of medical care.
· To provide services based on human need, with compassion and respect for human dignity, unrestricted by consideration of nationality, race, creed, color, or status; to not judge the merits of the patient’s request for service, nor allow the patient’s socioeconomic status or personal identity to influence our demeanor or the care that we assist in providing.
· To not use professional knowledge and skills in any enterprise detrimental to the public well-being or my patient.
· To respect and hold in confidence all information of a confidential nature obtained in the course of professional service unless required by law to divulge such information.
· To use social media and publications in a responsible and professional manner that does not discredit, dishonor, or embarrass the medical organization, co-workers, other health care practitioners, students, patients, individuals or the community at large.
· To maintain professional competence, striving always for clinical excellence in the delivery of patient care.
· To assume responsibility for upholding standards of professional practice and education.
· To assume responsibility for individual professional actions and judgment, both in dependent and independent emergency functions under the supervision of the educator, and to know and uphold the laws that affect the practice of medicine.
· To be aware of and participate in matters of legislation and regulation affecting the practice of medicine.
· To work cooperatively with other healthcare professionals in the best interest of our patients. Being faithful to my obligations to my patients, other students, other providers, and the organization.
· To refuse participation in unethical procedures, and assume the responsibility to expose incompetence or unethical conduct of others to the appropriate authority in a proper and professional manner.
· To only practice within the bounds of the professionals who are guiding me and not to independently take responsibility for any patient without an attending authority.
· To follow the lawful orders of those appointed over me or those who have attained higher skill and training unless doing so would violate the statutes above.
· Above all to serve my community with integrity, respect, and competence through my educational experience. Supporting and defending it with my whole being.
All of I, as an allied health medical student, commit myself to and attest before __________________________ on ___________________.
Primum Non Nocere
The Oath reinforces our commitment to beneficence, non-maleficence, and autonomy. It is our, allied health, version of the Hippocratic Oath as future providers and provides us a guiding moral light to keep us on our educational journey. It is our pledge that as we learn we will first do no harm.
“Taking part in the Allied Healthcare Student Provider Oath boosted my confidence and morale as part of the Sports Medicine community of practice. I felt a strong sense of honor and responsibility, and it reminded me of the purpose and meaning of my work as a Student Athletic Trainer.”
